Houses in New Mills
New Mills is up the A6 once I'm through Disley. It's SK22, in the High Peak, and it's a short run from High Lane. The town sits over the Torrs, the gorge where the Goyt and the Sett meet, with the Millennium Walkway along the rock. A lot of the housing is stone terraces built for the mills, climbing the hills, plus cottages and farms out towards Rowarth, Thornsett and Hayfield.
In a stone terrace the radiators and the pipework decide a heat pump, not the view. Rooms can be small, the walls are thick, and the cylinder is often in a tight cupboard. I look at all of that before I say if a pump is the right job.
Out of the town, a lot of the farms and older cottages are off the gas. Oil, LPG or a solid-fuel stove is what I find. An air source heat pump can suit a house like that, on a wet system, once the radiators or the underfloor heating will actually heat it. I'm BPEC Level 3 heat pump qualified, and the work I do is the plumbing side. I don't work on an oil boiler or a gas boiler. That's a different trade.
